Techniques:

  • Tempera painting (substituted by oil painting during the Renaissance)
  • Flat gilding
  • Raised and burnished gilding
Ingredients:

Tempera Painting
  • 1 egg yolk, water, gum arabic, pigments
Gilding
  • 24 carat gold leaf
  • flat gilding: pressed garlic/egg white, honey, water, gilding ink (encre à dorer)
  • raised gilding: for the gesso base: chalk/red clay (longer preparation), white sugar/honey, animal glue (fish, rabbit or parchment)
Materials:
  • parchment, paper, blotting paper, cardboard, black and colour ink, sponge, shells, flasks, brushes, pencils, cloth
