Techniques:
- Tempera painting (substituted by oil painting during the Renaissance)
- Flat gilding
- Raised and burnished gilding
Tempera Painting
- 1 egg yolk, water, gum arabic, pigments
- 24 carat gold leaf
- flat gilding: pressed garlic/egg white, honey, water, gilding ink (encre à dorer)
- raised gilding: for the gesso base: chalk/red clay (longer preparation), white sugar/honey, animal glue (fish, rabbit or parchment)
- parchment, paper, blotting paper, cardboard, black and colour ink, sponge, shells, flasks, brushes, pencils, cloth
